Growing up, my brother, Joel, and I would drive to Indianapolis to watch the Chicago Bulls play any time they were in town. Our family loves the Bulls. So, after volunteering the past few years with our Outreach Ministry and getting to know kids in the Lexington area, I really wanted to give some of them the opportunity to experience an NBA game. So on November 5, 2016, a few of our Richmond Road staff from Student Ministries and Outreach had the awesome opportunity to take seven kids to watch the Chicago Bulls play against the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis.
I don’t think the kids realized how close we were going to be to the action on the court. Surprising them with seats only 20 seats away from the Pacers’ bench was super neat and we were all extremely excited to see their faces. Two of the kids who went with us shared that their favorite NBA player is Dwyane Wade from the Chicago Bulls - they were so happy to be close to the court and got to take some cool pictures. The kids even had the opportunity to go through the Pacers’ tunnel and meet some of the players like Paul George! They couldn’t believe it was happening!
Though the Bulls lost (which was hard for me to watch), seeing the smiles on those kids’ faces made it the best night. The next day one of the parents texted Eric Schneider, Student Ministry Director at Richmond Road, telling him, “My son won’t stop talking about the NBA game,” thanking Eric and the team for giving the kids this special opportunity.
It’s a privilege to be apart of different people’s lives in this community. We loved our time with the students and look forward to more in the future!
