Serve The City and Southland Students Head To NBA

Posted on Wed, Dec 07, 2016 under Expression 3

Growing up, my brother, Joel, and I would drive to Indianapolis to watch the Chicago Bulls play any time they were in town. Our family loves the Bulls. So, after volunteering the past few years with our Outreach Ministry and getting to know kids in the Lexington area, I really wanted to give some of them the opportunity to experience an NBA game. So on November 5, 2016, a few of our Richmond Road staff from Student Ministries and Outreach had the awesome opportunity to take seven kids to watch the Chicago Bulls play against the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis.

I don’t think the kids realized how close we were going to be to the action on the court.  Surprising them with seats only 20 seats away from the Pacers’ bench was super neat and we were all extremely excited to see their faces. Two of the kids who went with us shared that their favorite NBA player is Dwyane Wade from the Chicago Bulls - they were so happy to be close to the court and got to take some cool pictures. The kids even had the opportunity to go through the Pacers’ tunnel and meet some of the players like Paul George! They couldn’t believe it was happening!

Though the Bulls lost (which was hard for me to watch), seeing the smiles on those kids’ faces made it the best night. The next day one of the parents texted Eric Schneider, Student Ministry Director at Richmond Road, telling him, “My son won’t stop talking about the NBA game,” thanking Eric and the team for giving the kids this special opportunity.

It’s a privilege to be apart of different people’s lives in this community. We loved our time with the students and look forward to more in the future!

Making Christmas Unforgettable

Posted on Thu, Dec 01, 2016 under Expression 3

True confession time.  I put my Christmas lights up before Halloween.  I tell everyone it’s because I’m taking advantage of the warm October weather, but that’s only partly true.  The real reason is that I just can’t wait for Christmas.

Why do I love Christmas so much?  Because not only is it an incredible time to celebrate Jesus, but it’s also a huge opportunity to unleash a revolution of love.  Here at Southland we will have thousands of guests come to worship with us on Christmas Eve, and many of them will bring their kids.

We want to make sure they have an amazing experience in Children’s Ministry.  That’s where you come in.  You can be on mission this Christmas Eve by jumping in and serving in Children’s Ministry.

Many of our regular leaders will be traveling, and so we need some awesome people full of Christmas spirit to come serve in our Design Studio Nursery or Animation Station preschool environments.
Make it a party!  Invite your family or friends to serve with you and create some unforgettable holiday memories together.

So what are you waiting for?  It’s kids.  It’s Jesus.  It’s Christmas.  What’s not to love?  Sign up here to unleash a revolution of love this Christmas Eve.
