The Best is Yet to Come

Posted on Fri, Mar 03, 2017 under Expression 2

As a child of the 70’s I can tell you that back in my day, life was good.   From my grandma’s house I could walk to the gas station down the block and buy a cold soft drink, a bag of chips and a candy bar for fifty cents.  Another block away, I could catch a movie for a buck.  And if I was really lucky, I could even talk the theater owner into giving me the movie poster displayed out front when the show was over.

Talk about the good old days!  I had cheap snacks, discount movies and free posters all within walking distance.  When you’re kid growing up in a small midwest town, it doesn’t get much better than that.

I guess we all have our version of the good old days, don’t we?   How about you?  You ever find yourself wishing things could be as good as they used to be?

It’s easy to get stuck in the past, but here at Southland we actually believe that our best days are yet to come, especially those of us who serve in the Big Picture Show Children’s Ministry.  Why?  Because we have a front row seat of what God’s up to in the next generation, and we’re inviting you to join us.

I don’t know what church was like for you as a kid, but in the Big Picture Show, it’s never boring. It’s a blast!  Each Sunday we bring the Bible to life for kids by unpacking serious truth in a seriously fun way. And best of all, our leaders get to watch God change kids’ lives through them.

So come help shape the future by leading a children’s small group, rocking a baby or even welcoming families at the door.  Who knows?  Some day when our kids are as old as I am, maybe they’ll say, “Back in my day, there was an amazing volunteer who showed me how much God loved me and it changed my life forever.”

Don’t be stuck in the past.  Invest in the future with God’s kids.  The best is yet to come!

Answering Kids’ Big Questions

Posted on Tue, Feb 28, 2017 under Expression 2

If your kids are anything like mine, they ask a lot of questions. Why do I have to go bed? Why can’t we get a dog? Why is the sky blue? Why is your hair gray? Why? Why? Why?
All of those are great. Asking funny, sincere and sometimes exasperating questions are how kids learn and grow. But let’s face it. Some questions are simply more important than others. Take these, for example:
  • How do I become friends with God?
  • What does it mean to follow Jesus?
  • When can I get baptized?
When our kids start asking us big questions about faith, that’s when we may feel like we’re in a little over our heads.
That’s why we created KidSplash.  KidSplash is a fun, interactive experience where kids and parents come together to hear the amazing message of John 3:16 and walk away with practical tools to talk about following Jesus at home.
At our first KidSplash back in 2009, one of the dads who was attending said, “I get this whole relationship God thing for myself, but I just don’t have the words, I don’t have the language, to explain it to my kids.”  KidSplash gives parents the words they need to be confident in conversations about faith.
So whether your child is asking questions about baptism or you just want to get the conversation started, come to KidSplash, and we’ll help you find your next step.  We won’t help you explain why the sky is blue or why you’re not getting a dog, but we will help you answer the big questions that count.
Our next KidSplash is coming up, Tuesday March 21, 6:30pm in Parkside Theater.  To register to attend, contact Wende.

Finding Forever Families

Posted on Thu, Nov 03, 2016 under Expression 2

“God sets the lonely in families…” Psalm 68:6.

At Southland we’ve experienced the joy of seeing families and individuals walk through the adoption process and bring home beautiful little girls and boys to welcome into their forever family. We’ve witnessed the selflessness of couples and families who have opened their homes to foster children of all ages. We’ve admired the sacrifice of people young and old as they’ve supported orphan care through funding both adoptions and foster care, and providing respite care for the courageous families who have taken the step of faith to get directly involved on the front lines of orphan care.

Have you sensed God moving in your heart to dive in and make a difference? Been praying about what you can do? Here are a couple of ideas to help move you further down the road in this marathon of a journey called Orphan Care...
  • Southland’s Ministry Partner, Orphan Care Alliance helps us to spearhead the movement of adoption in the Central Kentucky area. They’re co-sponsoring an event with Focus on the Family on November 12 called Wait No More. Learn more about waiting children in Kentucky and Indiana and how you can help! Register Here.
  • In the process of your first adoption? Contact Lisa Richardson to obtain more information and an application for our quarterly Dollar Club gift for first time adoptive families.
  • Contact Southland’s Adoptive Families Care Group and join them the next time they get together!
God has a huge heart for orphans. And we can all be involved in big and small ways, making a difference that changes kids’ lives forever.

Big Picture Show Family Experience

Posted on Mon, Oct 10, 2016 under Expression 2

What’s your best family memory from the past six months?  Was it a vacation?  A birthday party?   Maybe just a fun day around the house?  It doesn’t really matter.  It wasn’t the activity that made it special, it was the fact that you did it together.

It’s the together that makes it awesome.

That’s why we’re creating a together morning for families here at Southland.  Sunday, October 30, we’re hosting the Big Picture Show Family Experience in Parkside Theater during the 9:30 and 11:15 services.  We’ll worship together, learn together and laugh together as we check out what God’s word has to say to our families about trusting God with our fears.

At the Family Experience you can expect a live band, creative Bible teaching, fun giveaways and some practical tools to help your family have great spiritual conversations for weeks to come.  The service is designed for elementary kids and their parents or guardians but siblings and grandparents are welcome too.

The Drive-In and Backlot environments will be closed that Sunday to give everyone the chance to participate in the Family Experience, but the Design Studio and Animation Station will be open.  All kids attending the Family Experience must be accompanied by an adult.   So come join us in Parkside Theater and let’s make some awesome memories together.

Celebrating Baptism Birthdays

Posted on Mon, Oct 03, 2016 under Expression 2

Birthdays are a big deal!   They’re a great excuse to celebrate the value of each child’s life and to remind them how special they are to God.  That’s why every year we bust out the cake, balloons and presents and have a blast.

As great as our physical birthdays are, however, they pale in comparison to our spiritual birthdays, the anniversary of the day we became a brand new creation.

Think about it.  On our physical birthday, we were born into a world where we were destined to die, but on our spiritual birthday we were born into a world where we are destined to live . . forever . . . with Jesus!

Now that’s worth celebrating!

The anniversary of your child’s baptism is a great opportunity to recognize what God’s been doing in their life over the past year.  It’s a milestone to mark their spiritual growth and to remind them of God’s faithfulness.  Plus, it’s a great excuse to eat cake and party with your family.  Who doesn’t need more of those?

For your child’s baptism birthday, you can go as big or as small as you want.  You don’t even have to spend much money.  The important thing is to do something.  Mark the day.  Celebrate.  Make it special.

How to Celebrate

Here are a few possibilities to help make your child’s baptism birthday a meaningful and fun tradition they will look forward to year after year:
  • The night before your child’s baptism birthday, decorate the breakfast table after they go to bed.  You can use balloons, streamers or make a poster wishing them “Happy Baptism Birthday!”  Be as sneaky as possible so it’s a big surprise.
  • Get them a special treat like a doughnut and set out a birthday card and present.   You can give them something simple like a bookmark with Scripture or go bigger with a new journal, Bible or a fun Christian CD.
  • At dinner that night go around the table and have everyone in your family share one way they’ve seen your child become more like Jesus over the last year.  Eat cake & celebrate!
  • If you have pictures or video of your child’s baptism, get them out after dinner and look at them together.  If your child wrote a “Jesus Letter” through our KidSplash experience, have them read it out loud to remind them of what God was doing in their heart at the time of their baptism.  Remind them how much you love them and pray for them before bed.
That’s it.  You can make this day as elaborate or as simple as you want it to be.   Don’t feel tied to these ideas, but use them as a springboard to create a unique celebration that fits your family.  Over the years these celebrations will encourage your child’s faith and help them to see how they are growing in their walk with God.

Give us a Shout
We’d love to hear about your child’s baptism birthday.  Shoot me an e-mail and tell us your story or even send us a picture so we can celebrate with you on this special day.
