Orlando And West Virginia Relief

Posted on Thu, Jun 30, 2016 under Expression 4

In the last 2 weeks our country has seen the deadliest mass shooting in our history in Orlando and one of the worst floods West Virginia has on record. Whenever these tragedies happen our natural response is to want to help in some way.  So, how do we effectively help the victims in both the Orlando shooting and the West Virginia flooding? As a church we always take time to pray and listen for what God calls us to do. We resist the urge to react as we’ve learned that the first responders and local ministries do best to assess and coach us on how we can providing lasting help. Here is our current plan of how we are responding to both tragedies:
  • Orlando:
    • Pray for the victim’s families as we did together Sunday, June 19.  Here is a list of each victim’s name and age.
    • Donate to Discovery Church’s Heal Orlando fund that will go to help victim’s families with financial assistance.
    • Donate to the Bridges of Light Victim Education Fund, which is raising money to pay for college tuition for each of the 13 children left without a parent after the shooting.
  • West Virginia:
    • Pray for the families of the 23 people who lost their lives and pray for people who lived in the more than 1,200 homes that were damaged or destroyed.
    • We are encouraging those who want to help by making a monetary donation to Samaritan’s Purse, who is on the ground in West Virginia assisting victims. You can also find information on volunteering your time with Samaritan’s Purse at the link provided.
We’ve received numerous calls and emails about how to help.  Thank you for being a community that cares about people not just locally, but nationally.

You Have Another Chance!

Posted on Thu, Jun 30, 2016 under Expression 1

Over the past few days, we've launched 200 people into biblical community for the summer at Launch Nights across all of our campuses! People in Danville, Georgetown, Lexington, and Nicholasville came out for a night of fun, food, and most importantly - finding a group. We can't wait to see how God uses these groups to form lasting friendships as people serve together, get to know one another, and have a blast!

If you missed Launch Night, it's not too late for you to get connected and make some new friends this summer.

If you attend our Georgetown or Danville campuses, contact Laura McIntyre for information on getting connected to one of our groups.

For our Richmond Road and Harrodsburg Road campuses, you can sign up for a second summer launch coming up on Thursday, July 7th at the Harrodsburg Road Campus in Building F at 7pm. We'll provide dessert and drinks and connect you to a group of awesome people for the summer! Sign up to attend here.

Honoring Wayne B. Smith

Posted on Wed, Jun 29, 2016 under Expression 1

It is with a heavy heart we share that our founding Senior Minister, Wayne B. Smith, passed away this morning, June 29, 2016. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his homecoming in Heaven today. Wayne served as Senior Minister of Southland from 1956 to his retirement in 1996. He ministered to thousands of us in Central Kentucky and all over the world. With a bucket of fried chicken and his infectious laugh, Wayne represented Jesus through his years of faithful service at Southland. We’ve all been profoundly impacted by his ministry and are grateful to have known him and loved him.

Join us in praying for Wayne’s family this week and the season to come.

Coming Soon: Willow Creek’s Global Leadership Summit

Posted on Mon, Jun 20, 2016 under Expression 1

A friend told me several years ago there are over 300 leaders chronicled in the Bible, but less than one fourth of them finished their race well. Why is that? There are lots of reasons, but one reason is that many simply stopped growing. That same friend also taught me that if you make just one decision that affects another person, you’re a leader. All of us make decisions that affect others at home, work, church, or our entire community. So, congratulations, you’re a leader.

Every weekend in central Kentucky, we join in various locations to learn and grow together. How would you like to take that model and put it on steroids to deepen your leadership capacity by learning with other people from literally all over the world? What if you could learn from some of the greatest leaders in the country today -- from the Church, the business community, and nonprofit organizations -- and do it all from right here in central Kentucky?

The Willow Creek Association is again hosting their Global Leadership Summit on August 11-12 and if you consider yourself part of the Southland family, you can participate at a discounted rate. If you’re not up for traveling over 400 miles to the broadcast location, Quest Community Church in Lexington will be a satellite venue for the Summit. This is an awesome opportunity to hear from leaders with diverse backgrounds, including Bill Hybels, who founded one of the largest churches in North America. Some of the other speakers include TD Jakes, John Maxwell, and Melinda Gates (yes, that one), along with former executives from the Ritz Carlton and Ford Motor Company. Click here for the full speaker lineup and more information.

Between now and June 28, you can register for $99, which is about half the price of a regular individual registration. If you’d like to join other leaders in central Kentucky and register through Southland’s discount, just contact Cindy Willison here.

We’re Back Packing Backpacks!

Posted on Fri, Jun 17, 2016 under Expression 4

Southland’s Summer Backpack Ministry has officially started! Rick Warren says, “The best use of life is love. The best expression of love is time. The best time to love is now.” Now is the time, summer is the time, to keep feeding the kids who receive backpacks during the school year. You can help us unleash a revolution of love and extend that love to the poor by continuing to add backpack food items to your grocery list. We are so excited and we hope you are too!

At the end of the school year, we received some pretty cool comments from the kids we serve - can’t you just see their sweet little faces?!
  • Makes it easier on my family, we don’t get food stamps.
  • I like the Mac and Cheese!
  • I like that they give you food for the rest of the time so your mom doesn’t have to go to the grocery.
  • I like you get snacks.
  • It’s great, sometimes we don’t have food.
  • It’s good, those people are kind and caring.
  • It makes you healthier.
  • We can share it with our family.
We would also love to have you help us pack bags or distribute them to kids.  If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering in our backpack program, contact me or if you are interested in volunteering with Serve The City, contact Janelle.

Financial Life Coach Training

Posted on Wed, Jun 15, 2016 under Expression 1

Choices. There’s something awesome about having a choice. Giving people choices helps them move from being hopeless or helpless to being empowered. I’ve believed this for a long time. And Southland does something unique to place choices - and empowerment - back in people’s hands.

Every week, people contact Southland asking for financial help. They need to pay their water or electric bill. Perhaps their rent is way overdue. These are real needs and really good ways for Southland to help people in our community.

But instead of handing out money, Southland demonstrates care for the whole person by handing them a choice. We take the time to connect each person who qualifies for financial assistance with a Financial Life Coach. They walk through a process together - finding ways to stay out of debt and learning how to choose to be wise with their money. By offering long-term help, Southland restores dignity to people and empowers them to make choices for themselves.

Would you like to get involved? You can become a Financial Life Coach! Join us on Wednesday, June 22 at 6:00 p.m. for a training session at our Richmond Road Campus.

This training is for people from any Southland campus who are willing to use their skills to serve the community around them.

Summer Backpack Program

Posted on Fri, Jun 10, 2016 under Expression 4

Are you ready for something brand new this summer? Well, after the successful launch of our backpack program at the Richmond Road campus, our volunteers are ready to take on a pilot program that will partner the Backpack Team with Serve The City (STC) to provide a Summer Backpack Program! The schools we serve through our Local Initiatives program have communicated the need for summer feeding for kids and, in fact, one could argue the need for feeding kids is even greater in the summer since there is no ‘reduced/free lunch’ program with school out of session.

So, there are three important parts that need to come together… and you can be part of meeting that need! First, our backpack volunteers will continue to pack bags. Our STC team will then distribute them to families. And finally, we need you to continue to donate backpack food items throughout the summer! Check out the list of food items you can purchase and drop in the backpack bins in the lobby of our Richmond Road campus. If you’re like me, you are already going to Sam’s or Costco for your summer cookouts - join me in adding ‘backpack food’ on your grocery list!

The summer backpack program will kicked of on June 13th.  First packing date will be Thursday, June 9th at Richmond Road at 7pm and the first STC distribution will be Monday, June 13th.

If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering in our backpack program, contact me.  If you are interested in volunteering in our Serve The City area, contact Janelle Earley here
