Bible Story: Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10 NIrV)
This weekend, nearly 6,000 of you came together to help pack more than 1 million meals for kids in Haiti. Why? Because that's what we're all about. It's at the core of who we are as a church.
See, we have these four things called Expressions at Southland that help guide everything we do and the decisions we make. And one of those Expressions says that we want to be a church who Generously Extends Hope. Meal Packing is one of the ways we get to do that on a global level. But you know what? Each week we get the chance to be a part of something just as incredible as Meal Packing, but on a local level. It's called the Dollar Club. And each year we're able to radically impact the lives of nearly 100 families in Central Kentucky just by sacrificing one extra dollar each week.
This past week, we were connected with a single mother of two. In addition to working full-time to care for her kids, she also volunteers her time to work with young women in the community. Her goal is to help them make wise choices and experience freedom in their lives.
Earlier this year, however, both of her parents passed away within only months of each other. Their deaths required her to take time off from work for an extended period. Unfortunately, this meant she also had a reduction in her income and has struggled to make ends meet. And although she and her children don't currently live in a safe neighborhood, the loss of income has meant that she is no longer able to move her family into a safer area like she had one day hoped.
But because you gave an extra dollar last week, we were able to help her and her children secure an apartment in a safer neighborhood. We'll be able to cover the security deposit as well as her rent for a few months until she is able to get back on her feet.
Thanks for giving with your time for things like Meal Packing, but also for giving with your finances for the Dollar Club! It may not seem like much, but that single dollar you give each Sunday has the power to radically change someone else's life. And remember, even if you aren't here this Sunday, you can always be a part of the Dollar Club by giving online.
It may be hard to believe, but Easter is right around the corner on March 27! Now, Easter isn’t just all pastel dresses, button up shirts, and ties. It’s a time for all of us to come together and celebrate the One who gave up His life so that we could have life. So whether you’re a t-shirt and jeans or a 5-piece suit kind of person, just come as you are!
Easter is also one of the best opportunities to invite friends, family members, neighbors, coworkers, and classmates to church. And to make sure we have room for everyone, we’ve added a couple extra services at each campus this year.
Now, if you call Southland your home, we’d love for you to consider giving up your normal service time. Instead, join us at 1pm and maybe even park a little further away than normal. What better way to make a first-time guest feel more welcome than making room for them and giving them the best parking spots! Plus, it’s a great excuse to put those FitBits to use and get some extra steps in… But regardless of which service you attend, make sure you arrive 15-20 minutes early to have plenty of time to find a parking spot and get your hearts ready for worship.
After the 1pm service, stick around for Easter baptisms. Whether you’re ready to make the decision to follow Jesus in baptism, or you want to celebrate those who are, come out and join us! Bring a chair, some snacks, and help us celebrate those who will be making a decision to take the plunge to follow Jesus with their lives. All baptisms will be immediately following the 1pm service at the following locations:
So, invite your friends and get ready to come celebrate a God that loves us so much that He sent His own Son so we could have life! We can’t wait for you and your families to come celebrate this amazing day with us.
A few years ago, Andy Stanley had a great message entitled One, Not Everyone where he challenged people to do for one what you wish you could do for everyone. That's the heart behind the Dollar Club. We receive Dollar Club nominations from numerous folks at Southland each week wanting to extend hope to their friends and neighbors in Central Kentucky. And although we wish we could be a part of every story we receive, our hope is that we can do for one what we wish we could do for everyone.
This past week, we received a story about two grandparents who have been caring for their grandkids. Although the husband has cancer and the wife often has to work overtime each week just to make ends meet for their family, they are commited to providing a home for their two teenage grandchildren. However, their house is in major disrepair and, although they’ve paid for repairs to be made, they have have been taken advantage of by multiple contractors who took their money without any work being completed. This has left them in a situation where they’ve been forced to live in a trailer without plumbing, electricity, or heat.
But since you gave an extra dollar this past week for the Dollar Club, we’re going to be able to come alongside some other folks in the community and help them finish the much-needed repairs on their home. They’ve already received a donation to complete the electrical work as well as the plubming. And in addition to the supplies we’ll be able to provide, we’ll be able to help them finish repairs so they can move out of their trailer and back into a home with heat, plumbing, and electricity.
Thanks for sharing the love of Jesus in such a tangible way each week! Even if you weren’t able to come to services this Sunday, you can always be a part of the Dollar Club by giving online. And this week, be on the lookout for the one person you can invest in. Do for them what you wish you could do for everyone.
