Answering Kids’ Big Questions

Posted on Tue, Feb 28, 2017 under Expression 2

If your kids are anything like mine, they ask a lot of questions. Why do I have to go bed? Why can’t we get a dog? Why is the sky blue? Why is your hair gray? Why? Why? Why?
All of those are great. Asking funny, sincere and sometimes exasperating questions are how kids learn and grow. But let’s face it. Some questions are simply more important than others. Take these, for example:
  • How do I become friends with God?
  • What does it mean to follow Jesus?
  • When can I get baptized?
When our kids start asking us big questions about faith, that’s when we may feel like we’re in a little over our heads.
That’s why we created KidSplash.  KidSplash is a fun, interactive experience where kids and parents come together to hear the amazing message of John 3:16 and walk away with practical tools to talk about following Jesus at home.
At our first KidSplash back in 2009, one of the dads who was attending said, “I get this whole relationship God thing for myself, but I just don’t have the words, I don’t have the language, to explain it to my kids.”  KidSplash gives parents the words they need to be confident in conversations about faith.
So whether your child is asking questions about baptism or you just want to get the conversation started, come to KidSplash, and we’ll help you find your next step.  We won’t help you explain why the sky is blue or why you’re not getting a dog, but we will help you answer the big questions that count.
Our next KidSplash is coming up, Tuesday March 7, 6:30pm in Building C.  To register to attend, contact Wende.

Refresh. Renew. Rebuild.

Posted on Fri, Feb 24, 2017 under Expression 1

There’s something fulfilling about seeing God pave the way for His work in this world through people’s investment of the three capitals at all of our disposal: time, giftedness, and resources. At the end of 2016, people at Southland put all three of these together to help rebuild a church in La Régale, Haiti that was destroyed in the wake of Hurricane Matthew last October.

Our Ministry Partner, Lifeline, had invested in this church for a long time. They were excited to be able to have Southland send a team in January to begin the rebuilding process, thanks to the funds from our year-end This is Home offering and a team of people from the church who went to down to do a little hard work alongside the members of the church and community on the mountain in La Régale.

We will be sending two more teams to Haiti to continue the rebuilding process in the coming months. There is still space available on our final trip on April 29 through May 7. Would you pray and ask God if He’s calling you to be part of that team? If you’d like to sign up for this trip or learn about other upcoming trips, please stop by Connection Point or contact Robin to learn more!

Community Garden

Posted on Thu, Feb 23, 2017 under Expression 1

Warm weather is rolling in and we could not be more thrilled about it. Not only does it mean we get to be outside and enjoy it, but it also means the Community Garden will be up and running soon!

The Community Garden is one of our Local Outreach initiatives that generously extends hope to people in the community. Last year we distributed over 10,000 pounds of fresh produce to places like the Catholic Action Center, Refuge for Women, Serve the City, and other local area ministries.

This is where you come in: If you enjoy being outside and working with your hands we could use you! You do not need to have your own garden - or even a green thumb - to serve the community garden.

We need people who will help lead, plant, weed, water, and harvest the Community Garden over the next few months. You can serve weekly or seasonally, up to you!

Join us for an informational meeting on March 14th at 6:00pm in Building M at the back of the the Harrodsburg Road Campus. Contact Gordon Walls to learn more!

10-10-80

Posted on Thu, Feb 16, 2017 under Expression 1

Last month Jon shared some really exciting news. We anticipate Southland being completely out of debt by the end of this year! This will be the first time since Southland first bought property on Harrodsburg Road in 1979 that the church will not hold any debt. As a church, we will now be able to use the money that was applied to debt payments and put those dollars aside to save for a permanent location for our Georgetown campus - and future multi-site campuses! We are excited to be able to continue to grow God’s kingdom in Kentucky but we don’t plan to use debt to build future campuses. We will continue to use more than 10% of our resources for local and global outreach and to generously bless Dollar Club families. When our debt is paid down, the church’s “next” 10% will be saved for future multisite campuses. We have faith that God will allow us to provide life-changing ministry when we live on 80% of the resources He’s entrusted to us. In fact, we can’t wait to see how freeing it will be for our church to live the 10-10-80 financial model.

We want you and your family to join us in Giving 10%, Saving 10% and Living on 80% of what God provides for you. Why do we want you to adopt 10-10-80? Quite simply, how you handle your money is important in your relationship with God and in your family relationships. In Matthew 6:21 Jesus says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Adopting the 10-10-80 financial lifestyle may seem like a difficult goal for many of us. Keep in mind that Southland did not get to this place of financial peace overnight. It is the result of a lot of prayerful decisions - and some delayed gratification along the way. In the same way, getting to 10-10-80 with your money won’t necessarily happen right away. It’s a process. And it’s a process we want to help you with. Living generously by giving back a portion of your money to God can be made easier with online giving. If you want to reduce your debt, increase your savings, and put a financial plan in place, check out our website for information on Financial Peace classes that will be starting in March. Or if you are not sure where to start and you want to spend time with a Financial Life Coach, contact Candy for more information.

Make a Difference with Kids Today

Posted on Fri, Feb 03, 2017 under Expression 3

What do Helen Keller, James Earl Jones and Maya Angelou all have in common?  They each faced enormous obstacles in their childhood.

Helen Keller was deaf and blind. James Earl Jones had a debilitating stutter, and Maya Angelou could not speak because of severe emotional trauma.

However, there’s something else they have in common, something even more important than the challenges they faced.

All three had people who made an uncommon investment in their lives.  They each had a teacher who loved them, inspired them and helped them overcome their obstacles.

It’s amazing what can happen when someone believes in a child.  That someone can be you.

Each Sunday, God brings hundreds of kids through the doors at Southland, kids who need someone to believe in them, someone to invest in them and someone to make an uncommon difference in their lives.

You can do that just by showing up, smiling, hugging kids and letting them know God loves them.

The obstacles our children face may not be as obvious as the stories I shared earlier, but they will each have their own battles to fight in life, and they need people who love Jesus to love them through it.

So come hang out with kids in a Life Group, rock a baby or be that friendly face who greets families as they walk in the door.  E-mail Wende find out how you can make a difference serving in Children’s Ministry today.

Night Of Worship

Posted on Fri, Feb 03, 2017 under Worship Expression 1

"Without worship, we go about miserable."  A. W. Tozer

As we kick off Night of Worship in 2017 I want to invite you, your friends, and family to join us Tuesday, February 7 at 6:30pm in Theater 81 at our Harrodsburg Road Campus, especially if you have never attended one before!

We can be so busy, overwhelmed, and distracted by everything going on around us that it can seem inconvenient to add another event to your calendar each month. But what we can also tell you is that we are always blessed by the genuine, passionate worship we get to share with our church family!

Let’s take this chance to push back the miserable rat race we sometime find ourselves in and take time to gather and express our worship of the one true God. For more on what you are created for and what our Night of Worship events are about check out this video:
