The Power of Mentorship

Posted on Mon, Oct 31, 2016 under Expression 4

When I was in college, I had the opportunity to mentor a little girl in one of the elementary schools in Fayette County. This little girl was in the foster care system; she was six years old, and had been in six different foster homes. I don’t know what these homes looked like or what this little girl experienced from day to day… but I knew that being in six different foster homes at the age of six was not healthy.

One thing she was sure of was that she loved coming to school. Not only because school was her safe place. But she couldn’t wait for the days in the week when I came into her school to mentor her -- whether that was through working with her on classroom activities or playing games.  As time progressed in my mentoring her, this little girl finally saw a small glimpse of consistency and stability in her life and began to believe she was cared for and valued. She even started doing better in school and her self-esteem increased significantly.

You never know how far a word of encouragement, a hug, or the time and energy spent investing in a child through mentorship goes for a child who needs a mentor. It speaks volumes to them and makes a huge impact emotionally, mentally, and spiritually; the investment of time spent mentoring a child reflects Christ’s love and glorifies His name above all.

Though school has already started back, it is not too late to become a school mentor! We have many elementary aged students who still need mentors. Click here to start your mentoring journey!

Surviving The Holidays

Posted on Mon, Oct 31, 2016 under Expression 4

Remember that great scene in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation when Clark was admiring his amazing Christmas lights display and turned around shocked to find Cousin Eddie standing there?  As much as we try to have visions of sugar plums dancing in our heads around the Holiday Season, for many of us, the Holidays feel more like a surprise visit from Cousin Eddie.  This may be especially true if we’ve experienced some loss or change.  If the traditions we’ve always enjoyed and come to expect each year are altered by things outside of our control, it can change the way we view family gatherings, office parties, shopping...

If you can relate to any of this, you’re not alone.  On Tuesday, November 15 at 6pm in the Parkside Theater at the Richmond Road Campus, we’re gathering to talk about Surviving The Holidays.  In fact, we think you can truly thrive and find joy again even in the midst of change.  We’ll have some dinner together, sing some songs and receive some encouraging perspective around challenges like:
  • Traditions
  • Idealizing the Season
  • Relating to others in a healthy way
  • Dealing with pain
  • Preparing for the Holidays
  • Caring for yourself
We’re also inviting some of Southland’s professional partner counselors to serve on a panel answering your specific questions with practical insight and encouragement.

So join us on November 15 at the Parkside Theater, Richmond Road Campus at 6pm.  The Parkside Theater entrance is located at the back of the building, opposite side from Richmond Road so be sure to park there.  If you have any questions, feel free to email Laura or call her at (859) 224-1662.

Come Join Us At The Academy

Posted on Sat, Oct 29, 2016 under Expression 4

Looking for a way to get more connected to the mission and vision of the church? If you have time on Monday afternoons from 2:30pm to 5:15pm and want to have a ton of fun while supporting a student in our city who could use a little extra love, boy do we have the opportunity for you!

The Academy is an incredible one-on-one mentoring program for 2nd through 5th grade students at Breckinridge Elementary school who need extra support. We feed them a full meal, play together, and then spend the second half our afternoon doing homework and sharing a bible study and worship time with the students. The Academy loves to engage students holistically so we bring in speakers from the community to share about their careers and how God has changed their lives.

We have a waiting list of 7 students right now who would benefit greatly from this program.

Contact me with any questions you might have! Looking forward to talking with you.

Share A Smile!

The Refuge Clinic exists to restore health and value to the community through the unconditional love of Christ. One major way we do that is through dental care. Each week, the Refuge serves patients in our community who do not have access to basic dental care. We treat everything from minor cavities and hygiene to surgical extractions and dentures. It is a great joy to extend the love of Christ to our community in this way!

Currently we have a waiting list of 125 people who are in need of a general dentist’s care. Many of these patients have not received dental care in many years and are in need of exams, fillings, denture pieces, and more. These are all services we are equipped to provide, we just need more hands to accomplish it!

We are seeking dental professionals to build our team so we no longer need a waiting list for services! This includes Dentists, Dental Assistants, Dental Students, Denture Labs, and even students who are interested in the dental field!

Is that YOU? We’d love to have you join our team!

This Is Home - Special Offering Coming December 4

Posted on Wed, Oct 26, 2016 under Expression 1

For many of you, Southland is home. And everything we do at Southland points us back to welcoming guests to our church home and introducing them to a new life as a Christ follower. On Sunday, December 4, we will be collecting our special offering, and, naturally, we’re calling it This is Home.

Everyone participating in This is Home will be investing in the next generation as we send hundreds of students on a life-changing Christ In Youth trip this summer. We will also be extending hope to a hurricane-ravaged town in Haiti by working with our ministry partner Lifeline to help rebuild a church in La Regale.

Just as each of our homes are different, each of our Southland campuses have different needs in order for us to welcome visitors and help them to live with Jesus, on mission, and in community. In the coming weeks we will be sharing more at each campus to help you learn how your generosity can support both your church home and your community, while also helping our Student Ministry and the rebuilding efforts in Haiti.

We are challenging each person who calls Southland their church home to prayerfully consider giving at least $100 on Sunday, December 4. While many of you may be able to give generously beyond this amount, we would love to have 100% of our people sacrificially give. If that happens, we know people who don’t yet follow Jesus will be able to look at Southland in the future and say along with us, “This Is Home!”

We’ve got some good news on the horizon for our next session of Southland U! Dr. Johnny Pressley is coming back to teach through some really compelling material. He’ll be doing a series called “Supernatural” and working through the Biblical aspects, philosophies, and doctrines of some of the most interesting pieces of Scripture. We’ll be at our Harrodsburg Road campus this time around in the Atrium of Building F. You can get to the registration by clicking here

Whether you’ve been to Southland U or not, you can register and join us for an opportunity to dive deeper into the Bible and bring the scriptures to life as we learn from an expert on a wide variety of Old Testament topics.

One thing to note; The class will break one week for Thanksgiving. So we’ll meet six times between October 27 and December 8 with that one week off.
