We didn’t know… but God did.

Posted on Fri, Mar 17, 2017 under Expression 4

What do two oral surgeons, a dentist, a medical student, a P.A., a couple of nurses, a retired school teacher, a banker, a mason, a state employee, a brave twenty-something, and two church workers have in common? A calling from the Lord to live out the great commission!

A group of fourteen people left the comfort of their homes in the U.S. to love the people of Haiti, seizing the opportunity to live out Jesus’ instruction to “go and make disciples”.

It’s just like we read all over the scriptures - people of different gifts being called to one purpose. This trip to Haiti began as a “Medical Trip”. However, as is often true, God had another idea. You see, God knew that people needed teeth pulled and filled. We knew that, too. But there were other needs we could not have known about...

  • God knew that a block wall needed to be built.
  • God knew that school children needed hugs and someone to run and play with them
  • God knew that elderly ladies needed to be pampered by having their fingernails painted.
  • God knew that high school students had questions that needed answers
  • God knew about the encouragement that would come from singing worship songs in the open air with young and old alike.
  • God knew that there would be an impossible surgery put in front of the medical team, allowing them to be His hands and feet in a difficult situation.
  • God knew about the countless interactions and conversations that were going to happen in Haiti and He was waiting to see if we would respond.

I am thankful that these people responded with, “Here I am Lord, send me.” Paul writes in Ephesians 4 that we all have different gifts but that, “There is one body and one Spirit - just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to you all - one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” This trip was perfect evidence that we are joined together for one purpose... to share the love of Christ to all. Together, we had many gifts. But the unity of this team was evident based on the love of Christ that filled us up and gave us purpose. With His love as the foundation, we accomplished so much and can’t wait to go again.

This picture isn’t just for Haiti. Our church, our campuses, and our communities are made up of the same thing...people with different giftings. The thing that can unify us, to work out God’s plan, is the love of a Savior and the grace that we have all been shown. We can’t keep that to ourselves.

I had the privilege of watching this diverse team put Paul’s challenge into action.  Let’s all put it into practice and watch the body grow.

2017 Easter Service Times

Posted on Thu, Mar 16, 2017 under Weekend

Easter is quickly approaching and we would love for you to join us for our services on Sunday, April 16th! We don’t know about you, but we can’t wait for spring and all that it brings. This time of year is full of fun activities such as baseball and picnics but it is also a time when things come back to life, namely, flowers, trees, and everyone’s favorite ─ allergies!  Easter is also a day to celebrate being alive and new beginnings. On this day, we get to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made when He died for us so that we may live eternally, but we also celebrate that He is alive and working in and through our lives!
We encourage you to invite anyone you may know to our Easter services! To make sure we have room for everyone, we’ve added some extra service times as seen below:

Harrodsburg Road
  • 9:30am, 11:15am, & 1pm - Auditorium
  • 9:40am & 11:25am - Theater 81
Richmond Road
  • 9:30am, 11:15am, & 1pm - Auditorium
  • 9:40am & 11:25am - Parkside Theater

Danville
  • 9:30am, 11:15am, & 1pm - Auditorium

Georgetown
  • 9:30am, 11:15am, & 1pm - Lemons Mill Elementary
If you regularly attend a Southland service, please consider attending the later service time of 1pm and park further back than usual. We want to ensure enough space for everyone and we also want to give first-time guests the VIP treatment of a front parking space! Also, try to arrive 15-20 minutes early so you have plenty of time to say hello to some smiling faces, get settled and prepare for an amazing time of worship.

Easter Baptisms
At 2:30pm, after the 1pm services, plan to hang out for a bit and join us for the Easter baptisms. What better way to celebrate Easter than to witness new life in the Kingdom! Perhaps you will feel led to be baptized as well! Bring a chair, some food, meet new friends and come help us celebrate those who have decided to give their life to Christ- the greatest decision of their lives!

Pre-Marriage Classes

Posted on Tue, Mar 07, 2017 under Expression 2

Marriage is one of the best things you’ll ever do, but at times it can also be challenging. If you’re recently engaged or thinking about becoming engaged, we encourage you to participate in our Pre-Marriage Class on Tuesday nights at Harrodsburg Road, beginning April 11. I know in my own marriage I have benefitted greatly from God's truth, communication tools, experienced mentors, and gleaning from other couples.

Here are some quotes coming out of the class from other couples:

"Good foundation!"
"Opened several doors for communication."
"Gave structure to our conversations so we could better have Christ as the center of our relationship."
"Felt loved and cared for by everyone involved in the class."
"Learned more about personality traits and how they work together."

We're thrilled to offer this incredible experience as you begin your next steps in marriage. Register for our spring Pre-Marriage Class here! You won't want to miss this incredible investment in your marriage. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

Hope For Haiti Meal Pack 2017 Is Here!

Posted on Sun, Mar 05, 2017 under Expression 4

Have you helped us pack several million meals over the past few years? If not, how would you like to be part of the life-changing fun? Get ready to throw on a hairnet, get your groove on, and scoop some chicken, veggie, soy, and rice as we pull off one of the biggest events of the year at Southland. And make a huge difference for kids in Haiti who will get to count on solid meals daily for the next year.

It will take 6,000 of us to accomplish this massive feat on April 28th and 29th so that 3,500 kids can benefit from these meals. The meals will be shipped to Haiti to arrive a few months after we pack them. They will feed children at two of our Ministry Partners, Lifeline Christian Mission and COCINA.

Don't miss this opportunity to generously extend hope! Contact our team to learn more about how to get involved! OR… You can register here to serve!

The Best is Yet to Come

Posted on Fri, Mar 03, 2017 under Expression 2

As a child of the 70’s I can tell you that back in my day, life was good.   From my grandma’s house I could walk to the gas station down the block and buy a cold soft drink, a bag of chips and a candy bar for fifty cents.  Another block away, I could catch a movie for a buck.  And if I was really lucky, I could even talk the theater owner into giving me the movie poster displayed out front when the show was over.

Talk about the good old days!  I had cheap snacks, discount movies and free posters all within walking distance.  When you’re kid growing up in a small midwest town, it doesn’t get much better than that.

I guess we all have our version of the good old days, don’t we?   How about you?  You ever find yourself wishing things could be as good as they used to be?

It’s easy to get stuck in the past, but here at Southland we actually believe that our best days are yet to come, especially those of us who serve in the Big Picture Show Children’s Ministry.  Why?  Because we have a front row seat of what God’s up to in the next generation, and we’re inviting you to join us.

I don’t know what church was like for you as a kid, but in the Big Picture Show, it’s never boring. It’s a blast!  Each Sunday we bring the Bible to life for kids by unpacking serious truth in a seriously fun way. And best of all, our leaders get to watch God change kids’ lives through them.

So come help shape the future by leading a children’s small group, rocking a baby or even welcoming families at the door.  Who knows?  Some day when our kids are as old as I am, maybe they’ll say, “Back in my day, there was an amazing volunteer who showed me how much God loved me and it changed my life forever.”

Don’t be stuck in the past.  Invest in the future with God’s kids.  The best is yet to come!

Southland Groups

Posted on Wed, Mar 01, 2017 under Expression 1

Here in Georgetown, I get the chance to talk to a lot peeps, and you know what I hear a lot these days?

“I don’t know anyone here - I’d love to connect with people.”
“Coming to Southland every week is great, now I’d like more.”
“Gosh, the church is so big - how do you meet people??”

Sound familiar? It does to me! For the last few years, we‘ve offered Launch Night 3 times a year as an opportunity to connect with people at our campus and form small groups. Well, we decided to make that connection a little easier.

This summer, we are wiping the slate clean and introducing a completely new way to connect in groups at Southland. That seems like a long time away, right? So starting March 6th, you can jump into one of our 6-8 week groups.

Here’s what’s on deck for Georgetown:

The Beatitudes. Let’s walk through the words of Jesus together. Everyone is welcome to join us on Mondays at 7pm as Dan Jackson leads us through this teaching.

Girl’s Night Out. Sometimes, girls just wanna have fun. Sometimes, we wanna grow in the Word - for real. This time, we’ll do both as we dive into Finding I AM! Come check us out on Wednesdays at 6:30pm.

Food. Work. Good. The title says it all - we invite men to bring your appetites for good food and serving Georgetown on Saturday mornings at 7:30am.

We look forward to growing our Georgetown community together in these group environments. Join one of the groups now and reserve your seat.

Come see what Southland Groups have to offer you-there’s a place for everyone!

Refresh. Renew. Rebuild.

Posted on Fri, Feb 24, 2017 under Expression 1

There’s something fulfilling about seeing God pave the way for His work in this world through people’s investment of the three capitals at all of our disposal: time, giftedness, and resources. At the end of 2016, people at Southland put all three of these together to help rebuild a church in La Régale, Haiti that was destroyed in the wake of Hurricane Matthew last October.

Our Ministry Partner, Lifeline, had invested in this church for a long time. They were excited to be able to have Southland send a team in January to begin the rebuilding process, thanks to the funds from our year-end This is Home offering and a team of people from the church who went to down to do a little hard work alongside the members of the church and community on the mountain in La Régale.

We will be sending two more teams to Haiti to continue the rebuilding process in the coming months. There is still space available on our final trip on April 29 through May 7. Would you pray and ask God if He’s calling you to be part of that team? If you’d like to sign up for this trip or learn about other upcoming trips, please stop by Connection Point or contact Robin to learn more!

Community Garden

Posted on Thu, Feb 23, 2017 under Expression 1

Warm weather is rolling in and we could not be more thrilled about it. Not only does it mean we get to be outside and enjoy it, but it also means the Community Garden will be up and running soon!

The Community Garden is one of our Local Outreach initiatives that generously extends hope to people in the community. Last year we distributed over 10,000 pounds of fresh produce to places like the Catholic Action Center, Refuge for Women, Serve the City, and other local area ministries.

This is where you come in: If you enjoy being outside and working with your hands we could use you! You do not need to have your own garden - or even a green thumb - to serve the community garden.

We need people who will help lead, plant, weed, water, and harvest the Community Garden over the next few months. You can serve weekly or seasonally, up to you!

Join us for an informational meeting on March 14th at 6:00pm in Building M at the back of the the Harrodsburg Road Campus. Contact Gordon Walls to learn more!

This Is Home Guest Reception

Posted on Wed, Feb 22, 2017 under Expression 1

Do you remember the first time you walked into the doors of your favorite restaurant? How about the first time you were invited to your best friend’s house? Brings back great memories, right?! Everyone remembers their first time experiencing a place they love and are really connected to. We want every first-time guest at Southland to feel completely welcome and our goal is to have them walk away feeling like “This is Home!”

We are so committed to this here in Georgetown, we are taking a step toward making it an even more inviting experience by hosting a special quarterly meet & greet just for our new visitors. If you’re new to Southland or our campus in 2017, we are hosting our first  “This is Home” Guest Reception on Sunday, February 26 at 6pm and we invite you to come hang out with us! We’ll have some desserts and coffee, meet other new Georgetown folks, chat with our campus team, and learn how to get connected at Southland. We hope you’ll find a little time to come dine with us and let us help you feel at home at Southland! Register here so we can save a slice of pie for ya!
