Louisiana Relief Effort

Posted on Wed, Aug 31, 2016 under Expression 4

The last several weeks have been full of news about the flooding in Louisiana. Southland has been monitoring the situation and connecting with our friends at Journey Christian Church in Metairie, Louisiana, a church Southland helped launch 15 years ago and partnered with us post Hurricane Katrina. We will continue to communicate with Journey about any immediate needs they may have. For now, please continue to pray for those affected by the flooding.

Donations and serving opportunities may be possible through Samaritan's Purse at www.samaritanspurse.org or The Red Cross at www.redcross.org.

Join The Mentor Team!

Posted on Fri, Aug 19, 2016 under Expression 3

Thanks to our School Partnerships, we get the opportunity to invest in students at five elementary schools in Central Kentucky. Southland is making a difference in the cities of Lexington, Nicholasville, Danville and we now have an opportunity in Georgetown! Mentors show up one day a week for 30 minutes to spend time with an elementary aged kid to invest in them, listen and answer questions. It doesn’t require a degree or any special certification. Your life doesn’t have to be in perfect order. But you do need to be present. God will take care of the rest for both you and your student. Your life will be forever changed in the process.

One mentor said, “I walk away each week grateful for the childlike trust that children have. I walk away remembering that my ‘problems’ are not so important. I walk away with a lighter spirit and a greater understanding of why Jesus loves His children.”

There is just no substitute for the gift mentors receive from hanging out with students. There are always more kids than there are mentors willing to step up.

If you’ve been thinking about mentoring, it’s time to step forward. Join us this school year as we eliminate the mentor waiting list! Sign up at our Mentors Page today!

#SouthlandStudentsServe

Posted on Mon, Aug 15, 2016 under Expression 3

Truth be told, this hashtag is often lost on some of our students. In fact, many are too busy with #tbh, #blessed, #selfie, and #ballislife to have time to serve. Recently I had the opportunity to see our Middle School Students from the Harrodsburg Road campus live out #SouthlandStudentsServe. During the final week of July, 12 students and 4 leaders gave up a week of their summer to travel up to Cincinnati and partner with BLOC Ministries. BLOC is all about neighborhood revitalization - moving into and transforming the community through building relationships, physically improving the neighborhood, and sharing the love of Christ. They do this by living within their community and raising their own funding through a coffee shop, an art center, a gym, a woodworking shop, and a brand new screen printing shop. Each helps further the ministry as a whole and/or to help teach skills to those trying to break free from a life of prostitution, drugs, or crime.

We were able to join in their mission in several ways. While we were there, our team had the opportunity to:
  • Clear out a back lot full of overgrown weeds and debris
  • Finish building a fence and start another so the neighborhood children would have a safe place to play
  • Play with kids at several of the BLOC after school programs, learning their names and stories, and showing them the love of Jesus
  • Serve at the BLOC Cafe where we helped...
    • Prepare and serve a meal for the “clients” of Price Hill
    • Sort through clothes for their clothes closet
    • Sort and bag groceries for their food pantry
    • Carry bags of groceries upstairs for those we were helping
    • Have conversations and pray for some of those clients who came
  • Serve each other by helping prepare and clean up meals for our team
It was in these settings where it was easy to see our students living out Southland’s Expression #4 to generously extend hope to the poor.

All in all, we had a great week of serving others. As we left, the biggest signs of a successful trip were that the students were fast asleep before we made it to Kentucky (proof that they gave it their all) and the fact that all of them can’t wait to go back and serve again next year. I think I can speak for fellow leaders Shaun, Carrie, and Beka when I say that we were blessed to lead this team of students. They are a shining example of what #SouthlandStudentsServe is all about. I can’t wait to witness what God is going to do through them as they continually answer the call to serve others right here in Central Kentucky.

Southland will be taking a one day trip up to BLOC on Saturday, September 3. If you would like to learn more and register for the team, go here or contact Robin.

Dump The Club

Posted on Mon, Aug 08, 2016 under Expression 1

Yesterday Chris shared a story of walking in on a young boy dancing alone in the restroom of a Steak ‘n Shake.  After complimenting the boy on his dance moves, the boy acknowledged his own skills and went right back to dancing without a care in the world. That young man had yet to be told that he shouldn’t dance in public restrooms and I hope he never is told that.

When was the last time you danced in public without a care?  Why haven’t you? When was the last time you allowed yourself the freedom to totally be who God created?  To admit you like what you like? To do the things you love doing?  You see, God created you to live a life of freedom and authenticity. He already approves, accepts and loves who you are!  However, sometimes our dignity, image, or the approval of others keeps us from being who God created.

Attached you will find a membership certificate to the “Dignified Club”.  Feel free to print it out and then destroy it however you see fit.  If you are really daring:
  1. Video or take a photo of yourself destroying the certificate and doing something you love.  Is it dancing?  Is it singing?  Is it feeding ducks at a pond?  Document it!
  2. Go do it and post it to social media
  3. Use the hashtag: #dumptheclub and tag @southlandcc so we can share it as well.
Now Go! Be who God created and dance through life like a kid in Steak ‘n Shake!!

It’s Heeeere!

Posted on Fri, Aug 05, 2016 under Expression 4

John 14:12-14 reveals powerful words of Jesus: “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

It’s one of the best things we do each year. We throw a party for those who don’t have many parties thrown in their honor.  We dress up and eat, we take pictures, and play games. And we dance. Oh boy, do we dance! We call it Jesus Prom, and it’s that time of year again!

You will notice it’s a little earlier this year -- Friday, September 16, 6-10pm. You will also notice it’s at a new location -- the Richmond Road campus. Other things will remain the same. Like we’ll have a roaring good time hosting these Prom guests!

And this year we’ll be dressing up in full 80s regalia! Big hair, lots of bracelets, and leg warmers. And mullets for the men! Can’t wait to see your 80s spin!

Here’s what we need… YOU! We have thousands of volunteer positions to fill to pull off this night of nights. In all kinds of roles. We’re ready to sign you up, too! We need …
  • Greeters
  • Prom Hosts
  • Food Servers
  • And lots more!

Just head on over to the website and pick what volunteer position(s) you want to help with. And put this date on your calendar as well: Monday, September 12 - Training Night for all Jesus Prom volunteers.

We’re so excited to present Jesus Prom 2016 for our special friends and their caregivers. Get online and get signed up today! And get ready to have the time of your life! All we need is you!

New Processes For Children’s Ministry

Posted on Wed, Aug 03, 2016 under Expression 3

I was talking with some neighbors the other day about how much times have changed when it comes to child safety.  Growing up in the seventies and early eighties, we didn’t think much about car seats, seat belts, or bike helmets.  We didn’t carry EpiPens for our allergies and rarely used sunscreen on a hot, summer day.

Yet most of us who grew up like this would never dream of being so careless with our own kids’ safety.  Why?  Because now we know better.  Times have changed.  As a society we’re continuing to learn more effective ways to care for our children.

The same goes for us here in Children’s Ministry.  When it comes to safety we are always trying to learn from others, evaluate what we do, and refine our security practices to provide the safest environments possible for our Big Picture Show kids.  Times are changing, and we’re adapting along with them.

That’s why we are making a few changes to limit traffic in our Children’s Ministry environments.

Beginning Sunday, August 7, we will close down Children’s Ministry Check-In 15 minutes after the beginning of the 9:30 and 11:15 services.  That means all children must be checked in by 9:45 and11:30.  No children will be allowed to check in after that point.  Children who arrive later than this will have to attend the adult service with their families.

We recognize these changes will be less convenient, but like car seats, bike helmets, and sunscreen, we think they’re worth it because they will help us to take better care of our precious Southland kids.

Children's Ministry Leader - Georgetown
