Orlando And West Virginia Relief

Posted on Thu, Jun 30, 2016 under Expression 4

In the last 2 weeks our country has seen the deadliest mass shooting in our history in Orlando and one of the worst floods West Virginia has on record. Whenever these tragedies happen our natural response is to want to help in some way.  So, how do we effectively help the victims in both the Orlando shooting and the West Virginia flooding? As a church we always take time to pray and listen for what God calls us to do. We resist the urge to react as we’ve learned that the first responders and local ministries do best to assess and coach us on how we can providing lasting help. Here is our current plan of how we are responding to both tragedies:
  • Orlando:
    • Pray for the victim’s families as we did together Sunday, June 19.  Here is a list of each victim’s name and age.
    • Donate to Discovery Church’s Heal Orlando fund that will go to help victim’s families with financial assistance.
    • Donate to the Bridges of Light Victim Education Fund, which is raising money to pay for college tuition for each of the 13 children left without a parent after the shooting.
  • West Virginia:
    • Pray for the families of the 23 people who lost their lives and pray for people who lived in the more than 1,200 homes that were damaged or destroyed.
    • We are encouraging those who want to help by making a monetary donation to Samaritan’s Purse, who is on the ground in West Virginia assisting victims. You can also find information on volunteering your time with Samaritan’s Purse at the link provided.
We’ve received numerous calls and emails about how to help.  Thank you for being a community that cares about people not just locally, but nationally.

Honoring Wayne B. Smith

Posted on Wed, Jun 29, 2016 under Expression 1

It is with a heavy heart we share that our founding Senior Minister, Wayne B. Smith, passed away this morning, June 29, 2016. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his homecoming in Heaven today. Wayne served as Senior Minister of Southland from 1956 to his retirement in 1996. He ministered to thousands of us in Central Kentucky and all over the world. With a bucket of fried chicken and his infectious laugh, Wayne represented Jesus through his years of faithful service at Southland. We’ve all been profoundly impacted by his ministry and are grateful to have known him and loved him.

Join us in praying for Wayne’s family this week and the season to come.

BLOC Trip Has Moved

Posted on Fri, Jun 24, 2016 under Expression 4

Our Southland family has blown BLOC Ministries away with it’s help and encouragement this year! Many of you have called or emailed to ask about our next trip. We rescheduled it for Saturday, September 3rd from 9am to 3pm.

We will be back in Lower Price Hill to finish picking up trash, planting bushes or shrubs and checking on all of our previous projects. There is also a special opportunity to clean out a building that BLOC Ministries hopes to use as a brand new recreation center for the community.

The cost for this trip is $25 per person, or $100 max per family, which will include breakfast, lunch and plants or rental equipment as needed. Please bring your own work gloves! We will meet at 9am, at McPhearson Church, 931 McPhearson Ave, Cincinnati, OH.

If you are ready to sign up, you can register here! For any questions about the trip contact Robin

Serve The City

Posted on Thu, Jun 23, 2016 under Expression 4

In my opinion, the local church is one of the most powerful institutions on the planet. When you pool together the resources and passion of thousands of people and spread it out over a city, things can really change!

Here at Southland, we believe that one of the best things we can all come around is our Serve the City ministry! Our Georgetown Serve the City location spends three Monday evenings a month playing soccer and basketball, getting to know neighborhood residents, and meeting physical needs. On the last Thursday of the month, we hold cookouts at Georgetown Estates!

If you enjoy making new friends and practicing hospitality, then you’d make a great Serve The City volunteer! If you’d like more information about serving the people of Georgetown, contact Allie Gilkerson

Get Rooted, Stay Rooted

Posted on Tue, Jun 21, 2016 under Expression 3

Aside from the relationship I have with my wife, Erica, there is no other human relationship more important to me than the one I have with my children. When we said, “I do,” on our wedding day, we planted a signpost firmly in the ground as a moment to remember and look back to, and, at the same time, accepted a mutual responsibility for cultivating spiritual growth in one another.

We want to make the same kind of commitment for our children that we did for one another. By standing before God, in the presence of friends, family, and our church body, we as parents can plant a signpost in the ground and make a commitment to love, honor, serve, cherish, and guide our children in all truth and righteousness.

If you are a parent with an infant or young children - or even if your children are a little older and you have never made that kind of public statement and commitment to them and for them - we are providing an opportunity for you to do just that. Our Georgetown campus is holding a Parent Dedication Service called Rooted (think baby dedication, but with a lot more intentionality) on July 17 at 2:30pm in the Lemons Mill Cafeteria. This event is open to any parent(s) who desire to dedicate themselves to their children, and their children to God.

Here’s how you learn more about this event:
  • Read this blog from Jason Byerly about why we call it a “parent dedication” instead of a “baby dedication.”
  • Follow this link for information about registering for the event.
  • Email Dotty Harney if you have any questions about Rooted in Georgetown.

Coming Soon: Willow Creek’s Global Leadership Summit

Posted on Mon, Jun 20, 2016 under Expression 1

A friend told me several years ago there are over 300 leaders chronicled in the Bible, but less than one fourth of them finished their race well. Why is that? There are lots of reasons, but one reason is that many simply stopped growing. That same friend also taught me that if you make just one decision that affects another person, you’re a leader. All of us make decisions that affect others at home, work, church, or our entire community. So, congratulations, you’re a leader.

Every weekend in central Kentucky, we join in various locations to learn and grow together. How would you like to take that model and put it on steroids to deepen your leadership capacity by learning with other people from literally all over the world? What if you could learn from some of the greatest leaders in the country today -- from the Church, the business community, and nonprofit organizations -- and do it all from right here in central Kentucky?

The Willow Creek Association is again hosting their Global Leadership Summit on August 11-12 and if you consider yourself part of the Southland family, you can participate at a discounted rate. If you’re not up for traveling over 400 miles to the broadcast location, Quest Community Church in Lexington will be a satellite venue for the Summit. This is an awesome opportunity to hear from leaders with diverse backgrounds, including Bill Hybels, who founded one of the largest churches in North America. Some of the other speakers include TD Jakes, John Maxwell, and Melinda Gates (yes, that one), along with former executives from the Ritz Carlton and Ford Motor Company. Click here for the full speaker lineup and more information.

Between now and June 28, you can register for $99, which is about half the price of a regular individual registration. If you’d like to join other leaders in central Kentucky and register through Southland’s discount, just contact Cindy Willison here.

Summer Is Awesome!

Posted on Fri, Jun 17, 2016 under Expression 1

Summer is awesome! There is something refreshing about sunshine, grilling out, random trips to get ice cream or snow cones, picnics, parks and kids playing in the backyard. Summertime just feels good!

But do you know what makes summer even better? People! Playing in the sunshine, grilling burgers, eating snow cones, hanging out in the park… all of it is better when we do it with friends!

Last summer we gathered for the first time as a campus in Georgetown for a Launch Night. Almost seventy people gathered to join up with a Life Group. The goal was simply to connect for the summer so we would have a core group of people who were already connected to one another before our campus launched.

There was no requirement for these groups continue beyond the summertime. But they did! Almost all of the groups that launched last June developed such great friendships that they are still meeting today! Each and every person in those groups would tell you that life is just better with other people by your side.

We want everyone who calls Southland their church home to know the same kind of joy and fulfillment. That’s why we’re gearing up for another launch of Summer Groups on Sunday, June 26 at 4:00pm at Royal Spring Park! These groups are specifically designed for short-term summertime fun; there is no commitment beyond this five-week launch phase.

If you are not yet connected to a Life Group at Southland, plan to join us with your family on June 26. We’ll have pizza in the park, and we’ll help you find a group you feel comfortable with. We’ve got some great games and activities planned over the course of the summer for you to enjoy together, so there really is no better time to take the first step towards doing life in community! And if you’re worried that your vacation plans will make it hard to “commit” to anything for five weeks… just stop worrying! Your group will totally understand!

And here’s the thing: if you are in an existing Life Group, your whole group can join in the fun with all the other Summer Groups! Just register your group and come join us in the park on June 26!

Click here to register to attend the Summer Launch. If you have any questions at all about groups or the Summer Launch, don’t hesitate to contact LaShawn Barber!
