"I don’t know this man you’re talking about."
Benedict Arnold fought with the American army during the Revolutionary War. He did some great things for the revolution and became a general with great influence. That’s why his name is synonymous with loyalty right? Uh, wait, that’s only half the story. Arnold became bitter so he concocted a scheme to surrender the port of West Point to the British. His plot was exposed and the port was protected from attack. But ol’ Benny? Well, he escaped and joined forces with the Brits where he was given a fancy title and some fine loot for his troubles. He went from a revolutionary hero to a traitor and that’s why his name is synonymous with treason and betrayal.
Peter was one of Jesus’ closest friends. We read so many cool stories where Peter is right in the middle of the action. A miraculous catch of fish, a walk on water. He even fights for Jesus by de-earing a dude. But when Glenn Frey started singing, “The Heat Is On”, ol’ Pete started cussing and bailed on Jesus three different times.
Before we go and run down Benny and Pete, we should look in the mirror. How do you react when the heat gets turned up? Do you stand your ground and take whatever comes your way or do you blend in with the opposing army? Do you forget all that Jesus has done and bail?
Jesus died on the cross for us, but so often when faced with a decision to die on a cross for Him, we bail. We don’t like to admit it, but that’s betrayal. We’re no better than Peter. The good news is, Jesus forgave and restored Peter and because of Easter, He does the same for us.
  • Spend some time today examining your life. Would others be surprised to know that you follow Jesus?
  • Pray and ask God to give you the courage to stand strong and to forgive you for the times you’ve been like Peter.
