"With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last."

Death.
Adam and Eve started something in first few pages of the Bible that could not be stopped. God gave them clear instructions for how to live in harmony with Him forever and they blew it for all of us. When they disobeyed God, God punished them by commanding them to leave the garden. They could no longer remain in the presence of our holy God. Their banishment from His presence also meant separation from the Tree of Life. Death was inevitable. And since that time, the train of death has continued to roll.

But Jesus came to make things right. Unlike Adam, Jesus was obedient to His Father in deed and in mission. He came in the flesh, fully human, yet fully God, and never did a thing worthy of punishment. His perfection qualified Him to take the punishment of everyone else who deserved it.

God is loving, but He’s also just. That means He has to be consistent. When there is disobedience, there must be a consequence. But, God’s plan was that the perfect Jesus would pay the punishment for us since He did not deserve it for Himself. God’s loving nature satisfied His just nature.

On the Friday before Easter, Jesus fulfilled His mission to pay the price for our sin and restore our original relationship with God. Because of the Cross of Jesus, we can now live in harmony with God. The Cross of Jesus has become the Tree of Life.

There’s nothing more important than what Jesus did on the cross. Death is ugly and painful. But Jesus’ death was necessary. The Cross is the central point of scripture. Everything else is simply commentary. Because Jesus died, we have life.
