This week, we’re going to focus on five words to prepare us for Easter. Today’s word, fittingly enough is “preparation.”
When I was a kid, we prepared for Easter - the day Jesus came back to life after being tortured, mocked, crucified, and buried - by getting new clothes. Here’s me one Easter before heading off to church in my new duds.
Going sport coat, no-tie in the early 80s was cutting edge! It seems odd that “new clothes” was how we prepared for Easter, but it’s what we did.
Mary prepared for Easter by smashing a bottle of expensive perfume and pouring it all over Jesus. This may seem odd to us, but to Jesus, this was the ultimate act of sacrifice and love. She prepared Jesus for Easter.
It’s Monday and in 6 days, we’ll gather and sing songs about resurrection and new life. Many will be baptized. Thousands will go to church for the first time in a long time. Some ladies will wear big hats. And we have 6 days to prepare for that.
You know, those new threads we always bought actually makes sense. Paul says in Colossians 3:9-10 that we “have taken off the old self, and put on the new self.” My new clothes represented the new life Jesus died to give me. Maybe it wasn’t such a weird way to prepare after all.
