Skin Deep: Skin In The Game- Thursday
"Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, “What do you want with her?” or “Why are you talking to her?”
In today’s verse, Jesus was talking to a woman. Good thing, too. Because this woman? This woman led a ton of people to Jesus. I’m pretty glad Jesus likes talking to women. Not just because I am one and I kind of like talking to Jesus, but because I have seen the things that women can do when He is directing them. I have seen them become mothers to the motherless, rescue their sisters from prostitution, preach the truth of Christ to the masses, build hospitable homes for people to rest in, become scholars and teachers of the Bible, be soldiers who protect our country, baptize their friends, and heal their patients. But there’s a barrier here too. There’s always a barrier. The Enemy takes special delight in building up barriers between the people God specifically meant to work together. And God meant for men and women to be together, not just in marriage but in life. See, when Jesus told the Samaritan woman the Good News (Surprise! He’s the Messiah!), He knew she’d run around telling everyone on God’s green earth that He’d finally come for them. He specifically tasked her with spreading the Gospel. Guess who else was tasked with spreading the Gospel? The disciples. Jesus didn’t take the disciples’ job away from them to give to the woman. And Jesus didn’t withhold the job from her just because the disciples were already doing it. Jesus knew that there were, and still are, a lot of people who need to hear the Good News and He asked us, both men and women, to partner together to make that happen.
