Extending Hope: The Un-Class

Posted on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 under Local Involvement Expression 4

Want to get involved?

Want to serve in the community?

Feel like God is calling you to get outside the walls of the church? Southland's 4th expression says that "we generously extend hope to the poor." Here’s your chance to live that expression out. For the next five weeks you can participate in the Un-Class. This is an opportunity to do what Jesus asks us to do: LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR.

It is called the un-class because we won’t be spending much time in class. This is how it works. The first night we will meet at Southland Danville in the Party Room at Mallard’s at 6:30pm to discuss why and how we go about serving in the community. We will develop a list of missional opportunities available right here in our community.

The next three weeks will be spent being the hands and feet of Jesus in your chosen missional opportunity. You will actually go out and share love through service. The final week we will come together for a celebration and sharing time.

We can't wait to see how God will use you in the Danville area. Come on and get involved! See you Wednesday, September 5 at 6:30 pm

Hurricane Isaac – First Response

Posted on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 under Expression 4

In light of the strike of Hurricane Isaac on the gulf coast, the Outreach Team is working with officials to prepare for our potential involvement with relief efforts. From our past experience with disaster relief in Joplin, Missouri and Menifee County, we realize the importance of waiting for all necessary information to be gathered before launching any efforts. We’ve got a ministry partnership with Journey Christian Church in New Orleans and they’re helping us navigate a short term and long term plan if necessary. If the need arises to develop a long term plan to assist those in affected areas, we will update the blog to let you know how you can best help.

For now, feel free to do any of these three things:

  1. Pray. It’s our greatest resource and we want to be sure that we’re surrounding all of those impacted by the storm in prayer.
  2. Check here for updates and stay plugged in. As needs become assessed with wisdom, we’ll want you to stay in the loop.
  3. If you feel led to give now, grab a gift card from Walmart, write the dollar amount on the card, and mail it to the church or drop it by Connection Point. We’ll be working with Journey Christian Church to distribute those gift cards for people’s immediate needs.

Thanks for staying plugged in and willing to help. We’ll keep you posted.

Your Hands

Posted on Thu, Aug 30, 2012 under Worship

This past weekend at 608 I sang a song by JJ Heller called “Your Hands.” I had never heard it before being introduced to it for the weekend, but after listening to it I quickly realized it was my kind of song. It is a very simple melody, few instrumentation, and fairly simple words, but the simplicity of the music is what drew me in. Even though I was required to learn the song for the weekend, which meant I had to listen to it over and over, it didn't feel like I was just “learning a song” but ushering peace, stability, and hope into my life as I sang the words over and over. It became the prayer for my life this past week.

You Serious Clark?

Posted on Thu, Aug 30, 2012 under Worship

Sometimes I get embarrassed by the overwhelming amount of useless information I have floating around inside my head. Have you ever thought about how much junk we are exposed to in the course of a day? Lets take my day yesterday as an example. On my way to work I learned about the controversy between Tebow and Sanchez in New York, why not to pick Randy Moss in my fantasy draft, and why it doesn’t matter if Lance Armstrong doped or not on Mike and Mike in the morning. On my way home from work l learned about the quarterback battle going on at UK, why Chapman is the best closer in Reds history, and where I can buy a used Ford at the lowest price in town. After we got the kids to bed, Lauren and I watched an episode of “Chopped” where I learned how to make a squid tartare using pine nuts, strawberry ice cream, and black licorice. We then learned how to pan for gold in the jungle of South America, then topped off the night by learning that if we are ever stranded in an Arabian desert at night and happen upon a camel carcass, we can climb inside to avoid freezing to death. All priceless information!

What’s your Adventure?

Posted on Thu, Aug 23, 2012 under Local Involvement Expression 4

"Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all." -Helen Keller

What's your adventure? For my wife and I, our adventure is foster parenting. Over the past five years, God has continued to place a burden for foster kids on our minds and hearts. It's an adventure! It requires some sacrifice, some hard work, some excitement, some unknown.

The adventure is not the same for everyone. But, we think that for everyone the adventure involves "generously extending hope to the poor." That's our fourth expression as a church family.

If you're not sure what your adventure is and you're looking for some ideas, we'd love to help. This weekend we'll be highlighting some of our outreach opportunities during the weekend services. The Outreach Team will be available in the concourse to answer questions and help you get involved. We'd love to have you stop by. If you can't wait for the weekend, find out more about these opportunities here. If you're not a part of the Lexington community, check out the opportunities available in Danville.

Volunteer Spotlight: Gretchen Horton

Posted on Tue, Aug 21, 2012 under Weekend Worship

"For such a tiny person, she really has a huge voice."

That is a comment I hear all the time about Gretchen. It is true. This young lady can really sing and we are blessed to have her be a part of the Southland Worship team. She joined the team right away about two years ago and has not stopped giving her best every time she sings. Gretchen is a person that truly does live out the Fruits of the Spirit found in Gal. 5. That is the main reason why I am glad she is on the worship team. Her excellent voice falls second to that. I asked Gretchen a few questions so that we could get to know her a little better.

The Marriage Course is coming to Danville campus this fall!

In their book Love & War, John & Stassi Eldredge write, “Marriage is fabulously hard, but it’s worth it.” Every marriage takes work and intentional investment. Join us this fall for the first Sunday learning community to be offered in Danville. We’ve assembled an amazing team of facilitators and leaders for this class to come alongside the marriages and families here in our midst.

Trust me, you and your spouse need this. We need each other. So if you’re looking for ways to strengthen your walk, fortify your relationship, connect to other married couples, or to be an encouragement to one another, join us!

The Marriage Course is an 8-week class designed for married couples who want to strengthen and improve their marriage. The class includes topics such as healthy communication styles, conflict resolution, cultivating companionship, family development and, yes, s-e-x! This is a great couples’ opportunity for spiritual formation and connection to other married couples. Sundays, beginning September 9 at 11am at the Bingo Hall right behind the church.

Show People the Church

Posted on Mon, Aug 20, 2012 under Weekend

This weekend, Jon preached one of my FAVORITE sermons I've ever heard. Seriously (I wouldn't use all-caps so haphazardly if it weren't true). It was the perfect mix of inspiration and conviction for me. You know that feeling? You hear a story that's so awesome that it gives you the slightest bit of conviction to actually get off of your hind end and do something about it. I have a love/hate relationship with that feeling. You're sitting in service and you feel joy running through your veins. "Yes. THAT is what I want for my life. THAT is what I want for the Kingdom." And your conviction is driven by the joy, not some form of guilt. That's the key, here. You're inspired to do something, not whipped into doing it by a monkey on your back.

It’s that time again!

Posted on Sat, Aug 18, 2012 under Classes Expression 1

I love all the seasons, especially fall. Leaves changing, school starting back and kids in crisp new clothes, football. Very fun. Andfall also means that we get back on track in class offerings at Southland’s campuses.

This year, we’re really excited to offer a great lineup here in Danville! Here’s a look at the first round of discipleship opportunities:

Life’s Healing Choices
6:30pm, Wednesdays, beginning August 22.
Life's Healing Choices is an 8-week study that uses the Beatitudes of Jesus to help people understand how to move forward from the hurts, habits and hang-ups to the life God has intended for us.

Extending Hope: The Un-Class!
6:30pm, Wednesdays, beginning September 5
Jesus said “Go.” This un-class is designed to get us going on mission for Jesus. Matthew 28:18-20 says “As you go, make disciples” Each of us has a God-given mission. He has already placed you where he wants you to be on mission for him. The Un-class will help you discover your God-given mission and begin (or continue) living your life on mission for Jesus.

The Marriage Course
11am, Sundays, beginning September 9.

This course is designed for married couples who want to strengthen and improve their marriage. The eight-week class includes topics such as healthy communication styles, conflict resolution, cultivating companionship, and, yes, s-e-x! This is a great couples’ opportunity for spiritual formation and connection to other married couples.

Nehemiah: A Heart That Can Break (Women’s Study)
6:30pm, Mondays, beginning September 10
Nehemiah’s heart broke for the suffering Jews. This study will help you listen to God and turn your heart toward the hurting. God often uses a breaking heart to restore the broken.

Momentum (Men’s Study)
6:30pm, Tuesdays, beginning September 18.
BASIC is a seven-week discussion in which we will be challenged to search the Bible to find a real picture of God’s plan and vision for the Church. As part of our discussion each week, we will watch a short video from author Francis Chan. These videos are beautifully made and bring Scripture to life. Whether you’ve been a part of the church for years and years or are new to the church, these sessions will have a great impact on your walk with Jesus and your life as part of His Church.

Hope to see you as we grow together this fall!

Girl Time!

Posted on Thu, Aug 16, 2012 under Children Expression 3

Melinda and Mary, two of our girl small group leaders from the Back Lot, decided they wanted to invest more in the lives of the girls they lead on Sundays. We all met and they decided to have two days of "Girl Time" to see how it would be received.

They had eight girls sign up and 19 girls show up. The days consisted of worship, Bible study, prayer, making a craft for someone, taking the craft to the nursing home and giving them away, singing worship songs for the folks in the nursing home, and building community with one another. They all had a blast and we can't wait to see what God is going to do from here.

Student Ministry Kick Off

Posted on Fri, Aug 10, 2012 under Students Expression 3

Student ministry is kicking off for the fall beginning Wednesday, August 22 at 7pm!

Amplify is a highly anticipated weekly gathering that gives high school students a chance to hang out with friends, worship and reflect on how God is working in their lives. This happens each Wednesday at both the Harrodsburg Road and Danville campuses.

Lift Wednesdays offers spiritual growth and community through Life Groups for middle school students at the Harrodsburg Road campus. Middle school students at both Harrodsburg Road and Danville campuses meet on Sunday mornings for a large group worship and teaching.

And speaking of Lift on Sundays, beginning August 19 at the Harrodsburg Road Campus, Lift will offer two identical Sunday morning services at 10am and 11:30am. With the same worship and teaching at each time, you'll just need to plan on coming to one!

There are many ways students can be involved this year. Check out our Students page to see the opportunities.
