Boom, There Goes a Cone!

Posted on Sat, Jun 30, 2012

This parking attendant coudn't have described this team any better!

We consider the parking lot a part of the weekend service experience and we care what happens out there. You're the first person someone will see and the last when they leave Southland. Join this team to make a positive impression on every person that comes to this place.

Whether you're flying solo or signing up with your Life Group, this is a great opportunity to serve. No experience is necessary because we'll provide the training. And the best part? Matching safety vests. You know you want one.

If you're interested in serving, contact Pauline for Harrodsburg Road Team or Cindy for Danville Team.

Momentum for Men: Romans

Posted on Fri, Jun 29, 2012 under Classes Expression 1

A few weeks ago I asked a some guys what book of the Bible they would want to know more about. The overwhelming majority said Romans. Romans happens to be one of the hardest books in the Bible to really digest and understand. I’m no expert on this book but something inside of me loves the challenge of tackling one of the hardest New Testament books we have. Beginning July 11, join in with some other men as we kick off summer Momentum here in Danville by walking through the book of Romans. And, since I love studying the Bible with friends over a good cup of coffee – we're going to be meeting up for six weeks at The Hub.

See you there.

Singing Freely

Posted on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 under Worship

Worshipping should be like a stream flooding its banks and moving out over the landscape of our lives. Bottom line, worship overflows. Apart from the source, worship cannot simply be mustered or fabricated. Simple enough for us, the object of our affection in worship is also the source of our worship.

Worshipping the Lord, must be done in spirit and in truth. In John 4, when Jesus is talking with the Samaritan woman, He said, “You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know...But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him, must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:22-24; ESV).

Spread Some Love…and Paint!

Posted on Tue, Jun 26, 2012 under Local Involvement Expression 4

Jennie Rogers could use a little facelift and we could use your help!

Volunteer to help us paint the library at Jennie Rogers Elementary school on Saturday, July 14.  You'll get the chance to spread a little love and a little paint.

It's from 9am-Noon and we'll provide the paint if you can provide the rest: paint brush, roller, rollerpad, rolling tray, drop cloth, rags, paper towels.

All you have to do is e-mail Lana at danvilleoutreach@gmail.com and let her know you are interested in spending a few hours to help with this project. She'll be able to provide more details and set you up to come and have a great time with your Southland friends while helping our school partner!

Getting There Was Half the Fun

Posted on Mon, Jun 25, 2012 under Children Expression 2

Last week hundreds of people came out Tuesday and Wednesday nights to both Southland campuses for the first of our summer Drive-In Movie nights. Not only was it a blast to see families come together , worship and just hang out, but the home-made cars they brought were unbelievable.

Kids and parents went over the top creating their cardboard masterpieces. One of the hoods actually opened to reveal the engine inside and at least a handful had real working headlights. Our team estimates that we had around 75 different home-made cars between the two campuses. These families were all in!

The best part of this, of course, is that families spent a lot of time together to make their cars and, in the process, made something much more valuable, a special memory they’ll carry with them the rest of their lives. And that’s really what it was all about, giving families a fun excuse to sit down and spend time together.

At Southland we value sacrificially serving our families, and that can take many different shapes, but all of them start with the same key ingredient – spending time together. Being available to our kids is the price of admission for having real spiritual influence in their lives. So don’t underestimate the spiritual pay-off you may someday experience because you sat down and made a cardboard car with your child. That’s the relational investment that earns you a voice in the person they’ll someday become.

If you missed the first Drive-In Movie night, or didn’t get a chance to make your own car this time around, be sure and join us next month, 6:30pm, at the Harrodsburg Road campus or in Danville.

Volunteer Spotlight: Natalie Settles

Posted on Mon, Jun 25, 2012 under Children Expression 3

Natalie Settles is a teenager that has spent the last year investing in the lives of the next generation in Club Orbit, in Danville. I am so honored to have had the opportunity to serve with Natalie and I am going to miss her so much. She will be a freshman this year at UK, and below she wrote a few words about what her experience as a leader in Club Orbit has meant to her and how God used it to direct her in her vocation.

Before I started Club Orbit I was unsure of my major at first. I thought I wanted to be a Physical Therapist, but once I started to get involved with Club Orbit I changed my mind. God has shown me through Club Orbit that I want to be a Elementary School Teacher. Working with kids is what I love to do, and by being a leader in Club Orbit, I realized what I wanted to do in the long run.

God is so good and I love when He works in the leaders lives as much as He works in the lives of our kids.

Ichthus 2012

Posted on Mon, Jun 25, 2012 under Worship

We had the privilege of worshipping with thousands of people out in the middle of a field in Wilmore on Wednesday! What a great opportunity it was to share our heart for worship with so many different members of the church. We really do love being with everyone at Southland every week but when you get to go outside the walls and experience a large group of people that have assembled from all over the country raising up Jesus’ name together - It’s just a real blessing!

The team came away encouraged, both by the Spirit who was moving among us as we sang and by the fact that we can gather, even without really knowing each other, and join together in one voice.

If you haven’t had a chance to experience a worship event outside of Southland we want to encourage you to check one out. Whether it’s an event like Ichthus, a concert tour of one of the major worship artists or even just another church. Get out there and lend your voice to the greater movement of worship! I guarantee you’ll find yourself encouraged as you sing and honor Christ with your words.

Is your family up for the challenge?

Posted on Fri, Jun 22, 2012 under Children Expression 2 Expression 3

One of the best parts about summer is that Hollywood starts rolling out all the big blockbuster motion picture events.  These are the movies people have been waiting to see for months or, in some cases, even years.  You know what I’m talking about, the ones where fans dress up in embarrassing costumes and wait in line for the big midnight premiere?

Well, not to be outdone, we here in Southland’s Children’s Ministry are rolling out our own red carpet event.  We call it the Big Picture Show Summer Movie Challenge.  It’s a fun way to help your family have some fantastic faith conversations all summer long.  Embarrassing costumes and midnight viewings are optional.

If your family is up for the challenge, it's not too late to join in – here’s all you do:

1. Go to www.whosinthehouse.com once a week as a family and watch the current week's video.  Each week you’ll find a fresh clip from one of our past  family shows like Off the HookMetamorphosis orHeroes In the House
2. After you watch the video, check out the discussion questions to get your conversation started.
3. Have fun laughing and reliving all the best moments from the past several years of Who’s In the House, but don’t be surprised if you have the chance to get into some cool, spiritual conversations along the way.

The best part is, as long you have access to the internet, you can do this at home, at the beach or wherever your summer travels take you.  If you miss a week, no problem.  We’ll be backlogging all the videos that we post.

So get ready for a blockbuster summer and take the Big Picture Show Summer Movie Challenge.  Just because we believe God’s called us to sacrificially serve our families doesn’t mean it can’t be a whole lot of fun.

Kindle Giveaway

Posted on Fri, Jun 22, 2012 under Expression 1

Okay, so we’re close to our goal of 250 guys reading a chapter of proverbs every day. As of right now, 175 men have decided to take the challenge. Now it’s time to offer some incentive. If we reach our goal of 250, we’ll give away a new Amazon Kindle Touch.

What’s that mean for you? Well, first, if you haven’t signed up, go do it now. If you have signed up, start talking about it. Tell your friends, tweet it, post it, do whatever you’ve got to do to get the word out. If we get 75 more guys on board, then you’ve got a chance to win the Kindle. You could have a one in 250 chance of winning a snazzy new electronic device. And if e-reading isn’t your thang, then you can sell it and go buy that mustache trimmer you’ve had your eye on.

So head over and sign up right now. If you’ve already done so, start telling others about it. There’s a Kindle at stake, now.

Drive-In Movie Night was Awesome!

Posted on Thu, Jun 21, 2012 under Children Expression 2 Expression 3

Our "Drive-in" family movie event was awesome!

We started the night with worship, gave out a few prizes for the amazing cars our kids and their families made, and watched the Pixar classic Cars, while enjoying some popcorn and other snacks. I love our families and the community we get to experience when we come together.

My favorite part of the night was worshipping with our kids and watching them lift their hands to heaven when they sang, "we belong to Jesus".

It doesn't get any better than that.

Save the date for the next one happening on Wednesday, July 18!

We Salute You, Men!

Posted on Mon, Jun 18, 2012

My dad was a hero. He was a loving father to me and my four siblings.

A decorated military officer and brilliant man. Not a perfect man, but a good man. He lives with Jesus now, which makes those of us who loved him amazingly happy.

My husband is a hero, too.

A Christ-follower first and foremost. A loving husband, and faithful father to our two kiddos and three grandchildren. Generally an all-around good guy – everyone says so. Not a perfect man, but perfect for me. Next to Jesus, I love him best and most!

This weekend we celebrated fathers and men. This weekend we called you, visited you, and gave you crafty knick-knacks and neckties. But mostly we saluted you. Your role is irreplaceable in our lives. Your God-given DNA has you wired up to lead your entire family in the direction you are walking. That is both an awesome privilege and scary responsibility.

But you can do it. Just walk toward Jesus.

And we have some tools to help you:

  1. We're challenging you to sign up for this reading challenge, right here. Read one chapter a day for one month. And you’ll have completed the book of Proverbs at the end of it!
  2. We also have Momentum. Starting Wednesday, July 11 in Danville at The Hub on Main Street at 6:30pm. Led by our own Dave Rizer, you’ll study the book of Romans together with other men. Put that date on your calendar and spend 6 weeks with other guys walking toward Jesus.

Blessed is the man whose delight is in the law of the Lord, says Psalm 1:2. “He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” (1:3)

Thank you, fathers. Thank you, men. We’re all in your corner, praying you on! You’re our heroes. May you live long and prosper.

Where is Who’s in the House?

Posted on Fri, Jun 15, 2012 under Children Expression 1 Expression 2 Expression 3

If you go anywhere near our Danville Children's environments in the next couple of months, you'll notice some big changes in the rooms.

That’s because we're about to give our pre-school and elementary environments a complete make-over. We've already tackled the Harrodsburg Road campus and the Danville campus is coming up soon!

More than just a superficial facelift, this radical redesign of Children’s Ministry is part of a total rebranding of the preschool and elementary ministry as the Big Picture Show. The Big Picture Show is a collection of movie-themed environments designed to help kids find their place in God’s big story. This is all part of our effort to create the most compelling environments to unleash a revolution of love with our kids.

This redesign took months of preparation, months that would normally have gone into staging Who’s In the House, our big summer production for families. That’s why we’ve had to press the pause button and take Who’s In the House off stage this summer to give us time to complete our remodel project and prepare for the launch of the Richmond Road campus in January.

But fear not, Who’s In the House fans! Who’s In the House will be back in June 2013 bigger and better than ever, this time on all three campuses!

In the meantime we aren’t leaving Who’s In the House fans high and dry. Even though the Who’s In the House live event is off stage for 2012, the Who’s In the House home edition is now online right here!  We’re calling it the Big Picture Show Summer Movie Challenge. Each week we’ll be uploading another classic Who’s In the House clip for families to go check out together to get you talking about faith stuff at home.

Don't miss this awesome opportunity!
